An Oxfordshire church has raised nearly £1,000 for Viva Christmas Parties by holding an evening that included a combination of magic, comedy, curry and a bit of ukulele.
More than 100 people attended the event put on by Grove Free Evangelical Church, who likes to get into the festive spirit earlier than most!
Fiona Massie from the church, says, “Last time, we held our Viva Christmas Party fundraising event in July but, this year, we couldn’t even wait that long so, despite the sweltering heat of the last week in June, our Christmas Party took place.”
The special guest of the evening was renowned comedy magician John Archer, who – according to Fiona – “kept the gags coming while performing some jaw-dropping tricks, and without a rabbit in sight!”
After a tasty curry meal, provided at a discounted price by a local Indian restaurant, John gave his Christian testimony (in a comedy style) and also played some tunes on his ukulele.
“We were delighted it went down so well with the many non-churchgoing family and friends we had invited,” said Fiona.
“The money raised through the evening means we will have enabled vulnerable children around the world to have a party themselves later in the year which could well change their lives forever. That sounds magical!”
Could you do something similar in your church, or with a community group of which you’re a part, to raise money for Viva Christmas Parties.
